Dark Chocolate and Its Health Benefits

by | Nutrition, Stress management

As many of you know, I’m not a big fan of sweets. Pie, cookies, cake, ice cream, pastries, sweetbread…I pass on them when they are offered. Yes, they are tempting. Yes, they satisfy a craving for something sweet.

But I’ve learned over the years how my body reacts to sugar, and I don’t like it…headache, agitation, low energy, difficulty concentrating, poor sleep. I prefer not to put my body and my brain through those hoops. Plus, sugar is highly addictive. Even a small bite activates the dopamine response, encouraging my brain to succumb to yet another morsel.

But high-quality dark chocolate? Now that’s a different story. Note the emphasis on high-quality (sustainably sourced, ethically made, no additives, low in sugar) and dark (>70% cocoa content). My preference is 80-92%.

Why is dark chocolate my go-to sweet tooth satisfier? In addition to just one small square being satisfying enough, dark chocolate has been associated with several potential health benefits when consumed in moderation and as part of a balanced diet.

Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate

  • Antioxidant-rich: Dark chocolate contains high levels of antioxidants, such as flavonoids and polyphenols. These compounds help to neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, which can contribute to oxidative stress and damage cells.
  • Heart health: Some studies suggest that moderate consumption of dark chocolate may positively impact heart health. Flavanols in dark chocolate can improve blood flow, reduce blood pressure, and enhance the flexibility of blood vessels.
  • Improved blood flow: The flavonoids in dark chocolate may stimulate the production of nitric oxide, a compound that helps relax and dilate blood vessels, improving blood circulation.
  • Brain health: Dark chocolate contains compounds that can potentially enhance cognitive function and protect the brain. Some research suggests that flavonoids in dark chocolate may have a positive effect on memory and learning.
  • Mood enhancement: Dark chocolate contains serotonin precursors and other compounds that can trigger the release of endorphins, which are known as “feel-good” chemicals. This can lead to a temporary mood lift and reduced feelings of stress.
  • Reduced risk of stroke: Some studies have suggested that moderate dark chocolate consumption may be associated with a reduced risk of stroke, possibly due to its effects on blood pressure and blood vessel function.
  • Skin health: The antioxidants in dark chocolate may help protect the skin against damage from UV rays and promote skin hydration and elasticity.
  • Reduced inflammation: Flavonoids found in dark chocolate have anti-inflammatory properties that could help reduce chronic inflammation in the body, which is linked to various health issues.

Even with these potential health benefits, be mindful of consuming dark chocolate in moderation, as it is calorie-dense. Also, individual responses to chocolate can vary.

Now, the fun part. My favorite brand of dark chocolate these days is Askinosie Chocolate, identified as one of Forbes’ 25 best small companies in America. Askinosie makes its delicious products in its Springfield, Missouri, small-batch micro-factory and works with smallholder, sustainability-focused cocoa farmers from around the world.
