A tail-wagging experience

by | Resilience

Nothing makes my tail wag quite like spending time above 10,000 feet. I’m fortunate that it’s easy to find places to hike or snowshoe at that elevation in Colorado. The views, the fresh crisp air, the silence, the sound of wind in the trees, snowflakes falling, the sun reflecting off the snow … all seem indescribable now that I’m typing on my keyboard.

Tail-wagging is a phrase my husband uses to describe my enthusiasm and pure joy when I’m doing something fun. It’s that feeling of freedom and bliss that shows on my face and is reflected in my attitude when I’m experiencing time outdoors. When my tail is wagging, I have a light heart, a clear mind, and an appreciation for a life that is bigger than my daily routine.

Tail-wagging comes in many forms. For some, it’s dancing, cooking, singing, playing an instrument, sailing, or cleaning. Yes, a close friend finds joy in cleaning her house! Maybe it’s volunteer work, cycling, playing golf, walking your dog, or a job well done. Whatever it is for you, be sure to carve out time to engage in your tail-wagging activity on a regular basis.

The simple act of doing something you love releases health-promoting endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals that interact with brain receptors to reduce the perception of pain and promote feelings of pleasure. Consider them your natural pain reliever. In addition to lessening pain, including the negative effects of stress, endorphins strengthen the immune system, help lower blood pressure and play a role in controlling cravings. And who wouldn’t benefit from these positives, especially this time of year?

We all know that changes like eating more vegetables and getting to the gym more are good for us. I will especially encourage you to add more veggies to your plate each day! But when it comes to letting your body be your best friend and do what it wants to do naturally, then giving it the opportunity to release endorphins with a little tail-wagging is the best gift you can give yourself this year. Gosh…just try it for the remainder of this month and see if it doesn’t make a difference.
